Amazon consulting: what an Amazon consultant does, and when you need one

What Amazon consulting covers, the seven signs your account needs outside help, what the first weeks look like and how to prepare. From a working consultant.

In short

An Amazon consultant finds out why an account or catalogue is underperforming and fixes it: listings and search, catalogue structure, suppressed or broken listings, account health and expansion to new marketplaces. You need one when sales stall despite traffic, listings keep breaking, or a new marketplace is on the plan and nobody in-house has done it before.

What Amazon consulting covers

Amazon consulting is outside, senior help with the parts of an Amazon business that decide whether products are found, chosen and kept live. In practice it falls into six areas:

  • Diagnosis: account, catalogue and listing review, with a list of problems ordered by what they cost you.
  • Listings and search: titles, bullet points, search terms and attributes that match how shoppers search, within Amazon’s rules.
  • Catalogue structure: variations, parent–child families, attributes and one source of truth for product data.
  • Account health: suppressed listings, policy warnings, compliance documents and the fixes that stop them coming back.
  • Expansion: moving a catalogue to new marketplaces, with each language and market’s requirements handled.
  • Data and automation: the reporting and checks that let a small team run a large catalogue.

Some consultants only advise. Others, like me, also do the work. Ask which one you are hiring.

Seven signs you need outside help

  1. Sessions are steady but conversion is falling. The listing, not the traffic, is the problem.
  2. Listings keep getting suppressed or variations break after every update.
  3. Amazon has rewritten your titles. Since 27 July 2026, titles over 75 characters (media aside) are being replaced with Amazon’s AI recommendation.
  4. A new marketplace is on the plan and nobody in-house has launched one: Germany, France, Italy or the US each have their own language, attributes and rules.
  5. The catalogue is different in every market: sizes, names or attributes that do not match between countries.
  6. Someone spends days on work a script could do: copying listings between markets, checking attributes by hand.
  7. You do not know which of the above matters most. That is what an audit is for.

What the first weeks look like

StageWhat happensWhat you get
Free first lookOne ASIN or listing reviewedThe three fixes with the most impact
AuditAccount, catalogue, listings and attributes reviewedA prioritised action plan and an executive summary
Project or ongoing workThe plan is executed, or a monthly scope is agreedFixed listings and catalogue, agreed reporting

A good consultant gives you a written scope and price before paid work starts, and a plan you could hand to someone else.

How to prepare

  • Access: add the consultant as a user in Seller Central with the permissions the job needs. Never share your own login.
  • A list of priority ASINs and the marketplaces that matter.
  • Your goal in one sentence: recover suppressed listings, launch Germany, lift conversion on the top 20 products.
  • What has been tried, and who else works on the account (PPC agency, designers, translators).

What it costs

It depends on scope: the number of SKUs and marketplaces, and whether it is a one-off project or ongoing support. Consultants usually work per project or with a monthly scope. Be wary of anyone who quotes before seeing the account.

Before you hire anyone

Run your main listing through the free Amazon listing auditor. It checks it against Amazon’s official rules in seconds and shows what to fix first. If you then want a second opinion, I review one listing for free and reply within 48 working hours: request it here. And if you are weighing an agency against a freelancer, read Amazon agency vs freelance consultant.

I work as an independent Amazon consultant for brands selling in the US and Europe.
